What is Laughter Therapy or Laughter Exercises?
Laughter Therapy or Laughter Exercise, is a revolutionary approach to laughter that allows us to enjoy the many benefits of hearty laughter in the same way that we enjoy a game of tennis, a gym workout or a run and is a cardio vascular and aerobic exercise system
10 minutes of Laughter equals 30 Minutes of regular exercise.
It is a unique concept where anyone can laugh anywhere, anytime, for no reason at all.
It allows us to laugh at will and is a fun, gentle and easy system that stimulates laughter without jokes or comedy and without special clothing or equipment.
The reason it is called Laughter Yoga, is because it combines laughter exercises with deep breathing or yoga breathing. The word ˜Yoga” means to harmonise body, mind and soul and to harmonise us with the world around us. Laughter does this in a natural, spontaneous way.
The concept of laughter is based on the scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. One gets the same physiological and psychological benefits.
Laughter Yoga or Laughter Exercises was started by a medical doctor, Dr Madan Kataria, in 1995, with only 5 people in a public park in Mumbai. Today Laughter Yoga is practiced in more than 70 countries and there are more than 7000 Social Laughter Clubs over the world.
In order to get the scientifically proved benefits of laughter, we need to laugh continuously for at least 10 to 15 minutes and laughter has to be loud and deep, coming from the diaphragm, a real belly laugh. When doing laughter exercises, we are in a safe environment where we can laugh loudly and heartily and prolong the laughter for as long as we want.

This competition was launched by The Golden Oldies Fund Raising Club Eastern Cape and The Algoa Bay Council for the Aged and was supported by BLG Logistics. Celeste van der Walt won the award for Senior Citizen of the year in the Business Categorie.
